The Neuropsychological Rehabilitation Unit/NRU was created and is presently directed by Professor Cláudio L. N. Guimarães dos Santos (see, below, condensed Curriculum Vitae). Professor Guimarães dos Santos’ clinical, teaching and scientific activities presuppose, as their ethical basis, the absolute respect for human diversity, which means that each individual must be considered as a unique and incomparable human being. Activities encompass the domains of Psychotherapy, Philosophy and Neuropsychology/Neuropsychological Rehabilitation. As far as Psychotherapy is concerned, Professor Guimarães dos Santos has been working in the construction of a psychotherapeutic approach which he has called the Comprehensive Perspective, since his return from France, in 1992, where he obtained his Ph.D. This approach requires the strictest attention to the specificity of each individual, thus, preventing his/her “imprisonment” within the narrow limits of a given Psychotherapeutic School, no matter its historical importance or prevailing influence. Thus, according to Professor Guimarães dos Santos’ perspective, it is not the individual that has to adapt him/herself to a given psychotherapeutic method, but, it is the method that has to be adapted to the individual instead. Moreover, far from being restricted to the psychological domain, the Comprehensive Perspective, as a true transdisciplinary approach, roots its theoretical foundations in a much more enlarged conceptual framework. Such a framework encompasses not only scientific disciplines but also artistic domains, going from Philosophy to Movie History, from Anthropology to Dramatic Art, from Sociology to Semiotics, not to mention History, Literature, and Visual Arts. Indeed, it is precisely in virtue of its transdisciplinary theoretical basis that the Comprehensive Perspective, besides the fact of being a productive psychotherapeutic framework - appropriately equipped to effectively help those who need it -, also represents a useful tool in the process of artistic creation, in all its multiple aspects. For example, it can help actors during the construction of their characters or, still, it can contribute to clarify the psychological variables underlying the works of writers and painters. Now, as far as Philosophy is concerned, Professor Guimarães dos Santos has been developing a careful investigation of the epistemological and ethical basis of the praxis currently observed in the domains of Cognitive Neuroscience, Neuropsychology, Neuropsychiatry and Psychotherapy, during the past twenty years. The philosophical position called Neo-Reductionism – which represents a novel approach to the famous (and venerably ancient) problem of “mind-brain” relationships – is the most important result of that investigation, constituting the major foundation of Professor Guimarães dos Santos’ clinical, teaching and scientific activities. Finally, as far as the domains of Neuropsychology and Neuropsychological Rehabilitation are concerned, the work undertaken by Professor Guimarães dos Santos is pioneer in the effort of developing an ensemble of neuropsychological tools which are, at the same time, adapted to the defining characteristics of Brazilian Culture and flexible enough to respect the specific traits of each individual. In order to undertake his clinical work in Neuropsychology – which encompasses not only the rehabilitation of patients presenting cognitive dysfunctions but also the prevention and early diagnosis of such conditions -, Professor Guimarães dos Santos relies upon the valuable contribution of speech therapists Maria de Fátima Jorge and Amanda de Nazaré Galvão de Moraes Bittencourt.
